Light- Words of Wisdom for 05/31/2022 “IDOLS”

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

-1 John 5:21

WHAT is an idol? Often, when we use the word Idol, we think of a statue, specifically a golden calf as stated in Deuteronomy. This particular idol was built because they took their focus of God. The momentary situation became their focus and they lost sight of what God had already done in their lives. Little did they know what was taking place on top of that mountain. God was working even when they could not see Him.

FOCUS can be hard in today’s world because there is so much fighting for our attention. The Bible is clear that “where our treasure is, there our heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21 NIV). So, what is our treasure and how can it be considered an idol? The world tells us we need more, if only we had this job, or this amount of money, or this title. The world’s anthem is “if only” or ”what if” …. God’s anthem is “Trust me”, “Keep your eyes on me” and “Even if”. He has already proven Himself faithful, so why do we feel the need to constantly battle with Him or turn from Him?

HOW do we keep ourselves from idols? We ask ourselves, “Do we believe God is who He says He is?”, and “Do we believe God can do what He says He will do”? If the answer is yes, then our focus must be on Him. We must choose to surrender to His will, His way, and His time.

Lord, help us to keep our eyes on You instead of the lies the world tries to offer us, because You are enough. Amen.
