No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

-1 John 4:12

THE Bible teaches that Creator God is spirit and does not inhabit human form. But he can be seen. The clear teaching from the apostle John is this: when we love one another, God lives in us. Church involvement is important, as are prayer and study and service to others. But the one supreme marker of God’s presence in our lives is the presence of love.

THROUGHOUT the Old Testament, God was understood as “other” and distant. He was to be revered and honored, but intimacy with him was not presumed. Then, God burst into human existence in the form of a human, Jesus. And this Jesus taught, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” We know God the Father through the actions of God the Son.

OUR teaching today tells us that no one has seen the Father, but, if those who call themselves disciples of Jesus will choose to love one another, God is evident. Those around us will be able to “see” God. As we demonstrate love, others may begin to grasp the reality of “God” as his love is made complete in his children. In this day when many churches and Christian leaders are jockeying for power and prestige as they “fight the enemy,” our Father is calling us to love.

GOD the Father may not be seen because he does not dwell in human form. However, God may be “seen” through Jesus the Son, through the lives of individual believers, and through the love exhibited by the church—the members of Christ’s body.

Father, may those who are far from you discover you through the grace, generosity and love of those who follow you. Amen
