Light- Words of Wisdom for 03/15/2022 “SIN”

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

-1 John 3:9

YEARS ago I was summoned to a ladies’ Sunday School class where fisticuffs were about to break out! A visitor to the class had informed the others (repeatedly!) that she, as a believer, did not sin. At all. And that they, if they were true believers, would not be sinning at all either! The other ladies in the class took deep umbrage, and expected me to stop this woman from mouthing her heresy.

WHY had these other women reacted so strongly? No one likes to be told they are failures! And, in point of fact, this visitor was wrong. I don’t know if they were studying 1 John 3:9 that day or not, but that verse does say that a person born of God cannot go on sinning, that the seed of God would preclude them from it!

HOW should we understand this verse? Unless John is contradicting himself, he cannot mean that a true Christian is no longer capable of sin. “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves…If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar.” (1 John 1:8, 10) A key to interpretation are the verb tenses. John says a Christian won’t sin in a continuous, ongoing manner. Christians can (and do!) sin in specific ways. However, over habitual sin the Christian will begin to find victory by the power of the Holy Spirit. We have a new nature now! We’re born of God!

SOME days I don’t feel all that holy. I imagine you don’t either, but be of good cheer! When we fall, He is our Advocate. (1 John 2:1) Our Lord is at work in us, rooting out sin, and bringing about a family resemblance! His “seed,” His DNA, will begin to show through! 1 John 3:9 is a promise of what is to come!

Lord God, as we grow into your likeness, we are glad that sin loses its grip and we reflect your presence more and more each day. Amen.
