THERE is, perhaps, no more sacred experience on earth than to hold a newborn baby. Finally seeing the face, smelling the breath, feeling the soft skin of one who has so recently been with God is an unparalleled experience. From the very moment a mother comes to know the child exists in her being, there is a bond and a level of love unmatched by any other human dynamic. How incredible that God loves us, even in our iniquities, so much to call us children.

WE cannot understand the depth of God’s love in spiritual terms yet, so the writer, John, communicates our relationship in human terms. He tells us that we are so loved that we are not just CALLED children of God, but that we ARE children of God. The identification as children of God’s helps us understand the unique connection we share with our Holy Father. We have been born once to human parents, but we have been born again as children of God.

BEING called a child of God illustrates the level of intimacy we share with God. If we are in step with God in this sacred, intimate relationship, then the world does not know us because we are not of the world. The world does not recognize the things that are of God. We would rather be ignored by the world and recognized by the Father. This world is temporary but our relationship with God is for eternity.

Father God, thank you for the blessing to be called your child and to be so lavishly loved by you!
