IN our verse, the apostle states that walking in the light/truth will mean resolute faith in Jesus. John boldly declares that not all opinions of who God is are true. In contrast to the world’s rejection of absolute truth, there is one true God and Father, and He has revealed himself to us in His one and only Son, Jesus. The one true God is THAT God. In John’s day as in ours, there were false teachers who said they too believed in God, but just not the triune God whose Son took on human flesh and became a man. They would not embrace the incarnate Christ, both divine to bear God’s wrath against our sin, AND human to be our representative substitute. Then as now, many assert that Jesus wasn’t really God, or that he wasn’t really a man. John states, if you don’t embrace God’s anointed one, the Messiah and God-man Jesus, you don’t have God at all! They are one. Conversely those who confess and embrace the Son, have the Father also. They are the ones that John states later in verse 25 who have “eternal life”.
