DARKNESS implies ignorance, fear, lostness, confusion. Most people would agree we are living in a dark time, in our country and in our world. Combine that with the erroneous perception of God as angry, vengeful, and distant, and it’s easy to see why so many people are living with deep anxiety, as they are out of fellowship with other human beings and out of fellowship with their Creator as well.

THANKFULLY John comes along and explains the message we heard from Jesus, the embodiment of the Father—God is light and in him there is no darkness. Light portrays truth, trust, vision, and clarity. Understanding Yahweh as “light” helps dispel the false images and give us a trustworthy picture of his character. Isaiah said, the people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2).

OUR world may be in the swirl of hate and spiritual blindness, but that’s not the end of the story. We all have the magnificent opportunity to reach out to the One about whom John said, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Light prevails. Evil will not, and cannot, extinguish the incredible presence of divine light.

JESUS proclaimed, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” 

Lead us, O Lord, out of the shadows and into your beauty, wisdom, truth and light. Amen.
